Occupational Health/Infection Control Nurse

Our roots began in 1981 as the Montrose Clinic, with specialization in HIV education, testing, and treatment. Since then, the agency has expanded to 10 clinics in Houston, one in Baytown, two in Beaumont, and one in Deer Park with extensive services that include: Adult primary care, HIV/AIDS care, pediatrics, OB/GYN and maternity, dental, vision and behavioral health. We also service students within KIPP and YES Prep schools. Legacy is committed to driving healthy change in our communities.

Job Description

The Employee Health Services (EHS) Nurse is a nurse who provides direct and indirect nursing care for employees, with particular emphasis in the area of occupational health. The nurse for EHS utilizes established endeavors to promote health and safety to all employees by facilitating an Employee Health Program, protocols, and current standards of care to meet the wide variety of needs of the employee population while following infection control protocols, but this is not a patient-facing position.  

Essential Functions

  • Develop clinical and operational procedures and protocols related to Occupational Health
  • Coordinate employee vaccine programs when needed and – track employee compliance/declination for vaccines and other employee health related items.
  • Serve as a resource  for Occupational Health requirements
  • Support activities related to the pre-employment and onboarding medical assessment process
  • Monitors employee work-related illness and injury trends and assesses, develops and implements strategies to prevent work-acquired injury or illness and expedite return to work.
  • Performs blood borne pathogen exposure assessment, treatment and follow up.
  • Participates in preventative screening programs (e.g. TB skin testing, influenza, hepatitis B,  and other appropriate immunizations)
  • Safely administers and appropriately documents on immunizations and TB skin tests given to LCHS employees per protocol.
  • Perform communicable disease exposure follow-up, if exposure assist with communication follow up as requested.
  • Maintains and ensures confidentiality of patient information and medical records.
  • Act as an advocate for the rights of employees by ensuring access to preventative health and safety measures
  • Monitors accidents, occurrences and issues to promote a safe work environment.
  • Conducts wellness programs for employees
  • Consistently meets deadlines for data collection and reporting.
  • Collaborates with nursing to plan and conduct annual TB testing program.
  • Contributes to team effort via discussion regarding potential solutions when patterns in Employee Injuries are identified.
  • Responds to Employee Injuries, manages OSHA reporting, maintains internal policies, and monitors Workman's Comp claims in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Partnering with nursing, pharmacy, and other departments to gather data and/or push out messages to staff
  • Send messages/reminder regarding clinical training
  • Manage and validate Service Now data
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Health Promotion programs such as PPE, hand washing, etc.
  • Coordinate preventive screening, vaccination (e.g. TB skin testing, influenza, hepatitis B,  and other appropriate immunizations) and surveillance programs designed to identify and monitor risks to the employee’s health
  • Establish and maintain a HIPAA compliant medical database of confidential employee occupational health records
  • Safely administer and appropriately document immunizations and TB skin tests given to Legacy employees according to nursing standards
  • Investigation related to processes involved in applicable employee-related incident reports and working with workers compensation vender
  • Serve as a resource to the clinical team related to communicable disease exposure and perform follow-up with appropriate regulatory agencies
  • Work with Legacy’s preferred Health Insurance vendor to track employee health and safety risks in an effort to mitigate hazards and prevent illnesses
  • Assist with the management of emergency and disaster preparedness initiatives
  • Attend required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintains professional licensure and affiliations.
  • Follow the Legacy guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Maintain established Legacy policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
  • Implement job responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with the LEGACY Mission and Code of Ethics and supportive of Legacy’s cultural diversity objectives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Training Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of practical nursing or vocational nursing
  • Valid state license to practice nursing
  • Current CPR certification
