Benefits Specialist

Department: Human Resources Admin
Location: Houston, TX

Job Description

The Benefits Specialist is responsible for administration of employee leaves (FML, Disability leaves, or absences other than PTO), worker compensation, and required benefits reporting.   The Benefits Specialist answers employee questions and seeks guidance and assistance from Benefits Manager to resolve issues with benefits plans or billing when needed.  This Specialist will work with the Benefits Manger and other HR staff when needed for project assignments or data organization. 

Essential Functions

Manages all employee leaves and coordination for short and long disability and life and AD&D plans, and COBRA,

Manages Workers Compensation plan and turns in incidents reports and coordinates with managers/employees with each incident

Answers benefits mailbox questions and HR email questions and refers to Benefits Manger when needed

Reviews billing for gyms, EAP, and ancillary benefits

Reviews FSA accounts and makes correction when needed and coordinated with Accounting when FSA funding needs to be adjusted

Prepares reports required by law to be filed with federal and state agencies, such as IRS, DOL, insurance commissioners, and other regulatory agencies that are reviewed and approved by Benefits Manager

Serves as the secondary contact and resource for plan vendors and third party administrators

Shares responsibility with Benefits Manager to present benefits information during New Employee Orientation

Assist with annual open enrollment including communication to employees and managing enrollment data with all vendors; also included managing on line enrollment system

Assist with maintaining a wellness program for employees

Performs other duties as assigned.


Education & Training Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent years of relevant work experience.

Work Experience Requirements

  • 3 years of experience in coordinating benefit plans
