Laboratory Manager, Pre-Analytical

Our roots began in 1981 as the Montrose Clinic, with specialization in HIV education, testing, and treatment. Since then, the agency has expanded to 10 clinics in Houston, one in Baytown, two in Beaumont, and one in Deer Park with extensive services that include: Adult primary care, HIV/AIDS care, pediatrics, OB/GYN and maternity, dental, vision and behavioral health. Job Description

Areas of responsibility All Legacy Locations (clinic, public health, and school-based health)

The Laboratory Manager, Pre-analytical position will be responsible for overseeing the training and competency assessment of all new hires that are scheduled to locations where no reference lab phlebotomist/processor is present as well as select staff identified per site as backup specimen collection and processing support.

Disciplines of training include phlebotomy, specimen collection of all sources, and processing for acceptable sample submission. The manager must remain current in all aspects of the roles for which they are training. The manager will coordinate training with site leadership, facilitate training with the use of demonstration and training materials, and will float throughout the Legacy Community Health organization in order to meet training and competency objectives. They will ensure compliance with the curriculum through the use of routine site audits and direct observations.

Essential Functions

  • Adapt training approach to meet individual learning styles
  • Observe employee performing tasks and provide immediate constructive feedback to facilitate learning
  • Complete training and competency forms and other administrative tasks
  • Ensure that trainees are competent prior to placement at their site. Provide additional training as required
  • Monitor and report on the overall effectiveness of training; create tools to measure and track effectiveness.
  • Make recommendations to leadership on training
  • Assists with workflows in coordination with site leadership and reference laboratory staff
  • Serve as a procedural and compliance resource for employees
  • Establish departmental specimen collection guidelines for in-house testing
  • Monitor the specimen collection process for in-house testing and reference laboratory testing, ensuring superior quality of specimens, and ensuring appropriate corrective action takes place when deviations are observed
  • Train staff on proper centrifuge operation and maintenance
  • Instructs staff on test directory navigation for reference laboratory testing. Informs their director and reference laboratory when issues are identified
  • Takes part in department projects and initiatives including but not limited to quality improvement teams, and quality improvement investigations such as root cause analysis, standard operating procedure (SOP) development, department inspections, and audits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Training Requirements

  • Associate degree required. Applicable work experience may be substituted for the educational requirement
  • Must have knowledge of multi-site management
  • PBT (ASCP) certification preferred

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years in Phlebotomy required
  • Minimum of 2 years in a training role required
