Medical Assistant Bilingual - School Clinic

Since then, the agency has expanded to >50 clinics in Houston, one in Baytown, two in Beaumont, and one in Deer Park with extensive services that include: Adult primary care, HIV/AIDS care, pediatrics, OB/GYN and maternity, dental, vision and behavioral health. Job Description

The bilingual English/Spanish School-Based Health – Medical Assistant is a multifaceted clinic-based role that includes a multitude of job duties, as well as an opportunity for a traditional Medical Assistant to expand their skillset within a school-based environment. S/he will facilitate patient registration activities while working alongside the medical providers. An ideal candidate is flexible, enthusiastic, and highly motivated. Some school-based experience is preferred but will consider recent graduates with a desire to work in a school environment.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for maintaining and/or creating patient accounts/records within the medical software program. Assesses accuracy of demographic and policy information within patient accounts. Photocopies patients' identification and/or insurance cards as appropriate.
  • Reviews provider schedules, screen patient financial/demographic information for accuracy and updates patient records as needed.
  • Reviews patient insurance policy information.
  • Ensure that clients do not have another payer source such as Medicaid, Medicare, ADAP, and any other third-party insurance.
  • Refers patients to eligibility coordinators in Legacy Clinics within close proximity to the school-based clinic location.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork.
  • Answering incoming calls and routing them appropriately.
  • Performing client intake and notifying appropriate staff of the client’s arrival.
  • Follows appointment procedures as set by management.
  • Completes opening and closing procedures.
  • Keeps clinic lobby straight and orderly.
  • Will directly assist the school-based clinic nurse practitioner in performing clinic operational tasks including registration of patients, triage and vital signs, assisting with telephone management, patient education and assistance, and other clinic tasks according to procedures, policy, and protocols.
  • Work with the team in ongoing clinic development and implementation as needed.
  • Document all client care/contact as appropriate in a timely manner.
  • Assess needs of clinic clients and parents and assist as directed by a Nurse Practitioner and per protocols and procedures.
  • Consult with clients by telephone and providing follow-up, feedback, and assistance as needed.
  • Participate in clinic public health education and registration activities.
  • Assist with follow-up of lab results as well as other testing results with follow-up of abnormal values as appropriate and directed by a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Processes lab specimens as assigned by the Medical Director of Pediatrics.
  • Perform Phlebotomy duties as needed.
  • Consult with clients by telephone and providing follow-up, feedback, and assistance as needed.
  • May be asked to assist other providers in the future as needed due to clinic expansion.
  • Participate in clinic public health education and registration activities.
  • Assist with follow-up of lab results as well as other testing results with follow-up of abnormal values as appropriate and directed by a nurse practitioner.
  • Will assist with administrative tasks that may be necessary for the successful operation of the clinics.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities and performance reviews by Director of School-Based Operations and Medical Director of Pediatrics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, some medical knowledge.
  • Completion of Medical Assisting program at an accredited school. Certification preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish required.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to function and communicate with parents, students, teachers and team members who have a wide range of educational and social backgrounds.
  • Must be able to learn and use electronic medical record software.
  • Must be able to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • Ability to meet Legacy Community Health’s EPIC proficiency requirements.
