Senior Certified Medical Assistant

Our roots began in 1981 as the Montrose Clinic, with specialization in HIV education, testing, and treatment. Since then, the agency has expanded to >50 clinics in Houston, one in Baytown, two in Beaumont, and one in Deer Park with extensive services that include: Adult primary care, HIV/AIDS care, pediatrics, OB/GYN and maternity, dental, vision and behavioral health. Job Description

The Senior Certified Medical Assistant serves to facilitate the organization's ability to support patient care safely, efficiently, and effectively. This position promotes and provides education, observation, and data collection to drive desired outcomes as determined through clinical leadership.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for training new and existing medical assistant team members to ensure competencies.
  • Promotes shared vision and goals through demonstration of effective and efficient working relationships and duties.
  • Performs routine chart audits to validate appropriate documentation/practice of the medical assistants.
  • Successfully completes Regional Nurse Manager (RNM) training and attends meetings as assigned.
  • Performs tasks of a Medical Assistant two shifts every pay period.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team to facilitate the department’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Participates in monthly reconciliation of inventory of supplies, medications, and vaccines.
  • Attends all required training programs.
  • Maintains work area and equipment in accordance with Legacy and government standards.
  • Checks on the patient’s environment and equipment to ensure safety. Reports safety concerns promptly to appropriate personnel.
  • Follows Legacy’s exposure control plans/blood-borne and airborne pathogens.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment (Universal Precautions).
  • Follows the standard operating procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Adheres to the Legacy’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Assists RNM in the assessment, planning, and implementation of comprehensive clinical training programs to meet the orientation and ongoing competency and professional development needs of the medical assistant staff across all service lines. ·
  • Provides guidance to preceptors and serves as role model by providing ongoing coaching and mentoring to medical assistants.
  • Assists RNM in implementation of education and workflow changes/updates for the medical assistant team.
  • Identifies, collects, and reports clinical safety, quality, and training deficiencies that affect staff’s ability to fulfill their job responsibilities.
  • Regularly collaborates with management to report identified findings ·
  • May serve as the Vaccines for Children program coordinator.
  • Works within the context of a primary care medical home, applying a team-based approach to care while working in partnership with patients/families to promote timely access to care, understanding of patient care that is culturally sensitive and language appropriate, continuity of care, and the improvement of the whole-person through the teaching of appropriate self-management skills
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licenses, & Training (minimum requirements)

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Registered or Certified as a Medical Assistant required from an accredited school.

Required Years of experience

  • Minimum 2 years clinical experience

Desirable Education

  • Minimum of one year experience as LCH Medical Assistant.
  • Prior experience as medical assistant or similar capacity such as patient care technician or certified nursing assistant, preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

  • Basic front desk, clerical, or support specialist skills/experience helpful.
  • Ability to work with clinical staff, work well under pressure, and multitask within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to the concepts of preventive health care programs and team approach to health care delivery.
  • Phlebotomy skills preferred.
  • Experience working with computers.
  • Experience working in electronic medical records.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must be able to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in all medical assistant duties and responsibilities.

Desirable Knowledge. Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
